Join artist Candida Alvarez and catalogue contributors Zuna Maza, Assistant Curator at El Museo del Barrio, and Adriana Zavala, Chair of the History of Art and Architecture Department at Tufts University, as they discuss various aspects of Alvarez’s artistic trajectory and relationship with El Museo (where she was employed earlier in her career) covered in the new publication: Candida Alvarez: Circle, Point, Hoop. The discussion will be moderated by Abdiel D. Segarra Ríos, Curator at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC).

Candida Alvarez: Circle, Point, Hoop accompanies the exhibition of the same title presented at El Museo del Barrio on April 24 to August 3, 2025. Circle, Point, Hoop was Brooklyn-born artist Candida Alvarez’s first large-scale museum survey and first solo presentation in New York City since 1993. This bilingual catalogue, with a richly illustrated plate section, offers academics and non-academics alike an expansive entry point into her nearly fifty-year career that has included a wide range of visual strategies grounded on a dynamic exchange between representation and abstraction. Commissioned essays by Shiben Banerji, Terry R. Myers, Susanna V. Temkin, and Adriana Zavala, and texts by the exhibition’s curators Rodrigo Moura and Zuna Maza, shed light on different aspects of Alvarez’s artistic trajectory and relationship with El Museo (where she briefly worked at early on in her career). From a variety of perspectives, the texts provide insights into the role of the city of New York within Alvarez’s practice, reflections on the artist’s recent developments, the role of thread and string across several bodies of work, and the importance of time, place and memory to her creativity, among other topics.

The exhibition Candida Alvarez: Circle, Point, Hoop was curated by Rodrigo Moura, former Chief Curator, and Zuna Maza, Assistant Curator, with Alexia Arrizurieta, Curatorial Assistant.
