Jaume Plensa

Jaume Plensa, 3 Shadows of Rui Rui, 2024

Sombras y poemas presents a comprehensive survey of Jaume Plensa’s artistic practice at the Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Bringing together nearly one hundred works produced over three decades, the exhibition features sculpture, works on paper, and graphic pieces that collectively articulate Plensa’s sustained engagement with themes of identity, spirituality, and language. Installed with careful attention to spatial rhythm and light, the works establish a contemplative environment in which scale, material, and shadow operate as central expressive elements. The exhibition marks a significant presentation of the artist’s work in the Canary Islands, offering audiences an expansive view of his evolving formal and conceptual concerns.

Throughout the exhibition, Plensa employs materials such as steel, alabaster, bronze, and paper to explore the relationship between physical presence and immaterial meaning. The dual concepts of “shadows” and “poems” function as organizing principles, underscoring the interplay between visibility and interpretation, form and ephemerality. Shadows emerge as extensions of sculptural bodies, while language—often fragmented or allusive—serves as a vehicle for introspection rather than narration. Open to the public through June 13, 2026, Sombras y poemas situates Plensa’s work within a broader discourse on human consciousness and artistic expression, affirming his position as a leading figure in contemporary sculpture.
