McArthur Binion: DNA:Work and the Under:Conscious Drawings
Interview with Torkwase Dyson and McArthur Binion
Published by Richard Gray Gallery
Hardcover, 96 pages, English, 2020

Gray is pleased to announce a special publication produced on the occasion of McArthur Binion's forthcoming solo exhibition, DNA:Work and the Under:Conscious Drawings. Opening at Gray Warehouse this fall, the gallery’s first exhibition with McArthur Binion debuts eight large-scale paintings and seven works on paper from the artist’s DNA:Work and Under:Conscious series.

The accompanying volume presents 40 color illustrations, including high-resolution details and images of the works in situ. The publication also features a conversation between McArthur Binion and New York-based artist Torkwase Dyson. In their dialogue, Dyson expands on the physicality of Binion’s process as requiring “a level of concentration that can only come from using everything [the] body is made of. [The works] have an Agnes Martin level of concentration with a Cy Twombly kind of labor of mark-making.”

All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the artist's foundation, Modern Ancient Brown. Established in 2019, the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation endeavors to support the intersection between the visual and literary arts in the Detroit community, as well as elevating the city as a hub and resource for the artistic exploration of contemporary artists. In 2020, the Foundation launched the Modern Ancient Brown Artist Residency, a one-month literary residency, located in McArthur Binion’s Detroit studio.
