RICHARD GRAY GALLERY: 40 Years
New York - May 3 through May 31
NEW YORK - Richard Gray Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition marking its 40th anniversary. This exhibition brings together a small selection of superb works of art that the gallery has had the privilege of handling during its history, with a particular focus on the recent past. For the first time, works residing in both institutional collections and prominent private collections will be shown together. From 1963, when the gallery first opened its doors and began holding exhibitions in Chicago, until today, Richard Gray Gallery has built its reputation on exhibiting some of the finest works of the twentieth century.
Included in this exhibition will be master works of art by Willem de Kooning, Alberto Giacometti, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol, among others.
Alberto Giacometti, the subject of a recent retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, is represented in the exhibition by Man Walking, 1947. Known for his elongated, emaciated figures, Giacometti created a figure that has been described as embodying existential tragedy. This iconic figure of post World War II Europe is both haunting and yet an enduring symbol of hope as he strides forward to the future.
During the next decade, American artist Jasper Johns would co-opt the nation's 48-star flag, targets, numbers, the alphabet, and other everyday objects, bringing the "object as motif" relationship to the forefront. On the cusp between abstract expressionism and pop art, Johns elevated these ordinary objects from their familiar context creating a body of work that maintains its inherent structure, and yet is readily identifiable with the artist.
