North Carolina Museum of Art acquires Jaume Plensa's Doors of Jerusalem I, II & II

In September 2007, the North Carolina Museum of Art acquired Jaume Plensa's Doors of Jerusalem I, II & III, the first work by the artist to enter the museum's collection. The three-part sculpture will be permanently installed in the lobby of the museum's 127,000 square-foot expansion, slated to open to the public in the fall of 2009. Dr. Lawrence Wheeler, Director of the NCMA said, "As Plensa's creations are of international importance, the North Carolina Museum of Art is indeed fortunate to announce the beginning of the new museum experience with these three dramatic works of art."

Seated in fetal position, the figures convey introspection and yet emanate with a quiet powerful glow. The sculptural surface is "tattooed" with an excerpt from the Old Testament Song of Solomon in which a woman runs the walls of Jerusalem tirelessly searching for her beloved. Plensa mused that "[p]erhaps this wall is another metaphor for the body and the doors another metaphor for the soul. Dream and desire melted in the prison of the heart."
